Exposure Facts

Soccer is Edmonton's (and Alberta's) largest participant sport. Interest in both indoor and outdoor soccer is growing and should continue to rise. The soccer leagues running in our facilities range from the Under Six kids program to the Legends and Vintage adult leagues for players over the age of 45. Soccer has broad appeal as the world’s game and its diversity is apparent in the variety of users in the facility at any given time.

During the Indoor Soccer Season (October to April) our 3 Indoor Facilities are in use from 7:00 AM to midnight. During the day the facilities are used by various school, drop in and corporate groups - both the Edmonton Catholic School District and the Edmonton Public School Board offer Junior High and Senior High Soccer Academy programs, as well as Lacrosse. The participants in these programs visit the soccer centres during the school day to work on their soccer skills along with their academics. The Edmonton Indoor Lawn Bowling Club uses the Edmonton Soccer Centre West Mondays and Wednesdays during the winter to operate an indoor league. Various ladies and men’s casual groups use the soccer facility for lunch time soccer. Corporate groups use the facilities during the day to promote active lifestyles and team building for their employees.

The after-school hours are filled with soccer academies and practice bookings for the youth and some adult teams. The buildings are in full swing from 5:00 PM onwards on an average weekday night.

The evening and weekend hours are filled with league play games. Among the leagues using the facilities are our two partner leagues, Edmonton Minor Soccer Association and Edmonton and District Soccer Association, as well as Edmonton Interdistrict Youth Soccer Association, Edmonton Recreation Soccer Association and the Edmonton Sport and Social Club. Times not filled with league games are booked by teams for practices.

League games are not only attended by participants but by parents, siblings, grandparents, spouses and friends. The Edmonton and District’s Major League Soccer is the highest level of adult indoor soccer in Edmonton. Fans come from every community in Edmonton as well as the surrounding areas. They play out of the Edmonton Soccer Centre South on Sunday afternoons and always draw a large crowd of spectators.

During the season there are several soccer tournaments that attract out of town teams from all over the province and further abroad. These include the Millwoods Kickoff Classic in October, the EMSA Polar Cup in December, the ENZSA Power Play Cup in February and the EWZSA Slush Cup in March. The month of March includes league wind up activities, tryouts for the summer season and Youth and Adult Provincial competitions. The EDSA league celebrates the diversity of the Edmonton adult soccer community with its own Mini World Cup each year in late March early April.

When soccer moves outdoors for the spring and summer, the turf is removed off all of the fields except for one. This leaves 11 concrete surfaces available for indoor summer activities. Our primary summer activity is ball hockey. Other summer users include Greater Edmonton Lacrosse and Edmonton Inline Hockey. The turf that is left in is used for summer league play by the Edmonton and District Soccer Association and the Edmonton Sport and Social Club.
